A weekend in Sligo, in the middle of a snowstorm, was not on my list for the weekend. But a spa day was planned and it was not to be missed!
Storm Eunice had no mercy on Ireland as we drove from Dublin west to the other coast. Stormy seas, high winds and snow were all recorded in Sligo which made for some treacherous hikes! We were heading towards Devil's Chimney, which borders County Sligo and County Leitrim, to view the gorgeous waterfall on top. We couldn't find it and it wasn't until the next day, we realised it was actually Doneen's and Hudson’s Walk Trailhead 😅. While it was steep at times, and the slush didn't help, it was a nice Saturday morning type of walk. It's a 4 mile (6km) loop trail best used from April until November according to AllTrails.
The next stop on our list was Gleniff Horseshoe. This walk was particularly challenging as the rain, wind, and snow was starting to fall again. We only got up to about 1/4 up the hill when we saw the mountains disappearing in the clouds.
Nearly split down the centre, Glencar Lough (Glencar Lake) lays between Sligo County and Leitrim County. I'm sure it's gorgeous in the summer with a bright green view but I think the snow-covered mountain was spectacular! 😍 Sometimes I really had to wonder if I was in Colorado or some other picturesque winter state.
We are going back to Sligo to hike Knocknarea where Queen Maeve's Grave sits on top and finishes the day at Strandhill. Register for the event so I know to look out for you! 😊
